Top 5 Organizing Tips for Your Closet
Organizing a closet can be an overwhelming task, it’s a part of the house that many of my clients want support with. Implementing a few small changes can make a WORLD of difference. Here are my top 5 organizing tips for closets:
1-Purchase hangers
Why is this important? Purchasing the correct hangers is really important because they reduce unnecessary bulk and create consistency in your closet. Purchasing hangers that are slim allows your clothes to hang properly, freeing up more space for your other items. These slim, velvet, nonslip hangers are my recommendation. Another great item is this pant and skirt clip.
2- Categorize your items
It's best to separate your items by putting all similar clothes together. For example- all your dresses should go together, your shirts, your tank tops, etc. Categorizing your items will allow you to easily find what you need. When you are going through your clothes be sure to note the items you don’t use very often such as an evening gown. You can put these less-used pieces further to the back while your more regularly used items should be at the front.
3- Organize your clothes by color
When you have successfully organized your items into categories then we can start to think about breaking this down further. One option is color. Go through each category you’ve made in your closet and organize them into block colors.
4- Organize your belts/scarves/purses
Make sure that you have a separate section in your closet for items such as belts/scarves and purses. You can purchase hooks that hold a good amount of weight that will allow you to easily store these items.
5-Organize your shoes
I would recommend having your shoes at the bottom of your closet and categorizing them the same way you would your clothes - dress shoes, sandals, sneakers, and so on. You can purchase shoe racks which will optimize your closet space. The shoes you use less often should be put towards the back of your closet because you won’t need quick access to them. This shoe organizer is one I like to utilize to organize closet spaces.
If you have a larger closet space then a great thing to consider is having a business and casual section while implementing the above steps for both.
